Portugal is an ideal spot for this project due to its diverse population and the influx of people from various backgrounds who have brought different techniques to the country over the past years. This project aims to verify the most effective methods for mental health through a journalistic approach, always seeking the truth.
As someone who has been visiting Portugal for the past seven years and has lived in the country for over a year now, I have had the opportunity to meet a diverse range of people from every part of society and age, including both locals and foreigners. This firsthand experience has allowed me to gain a perspective on the country’s culture and its people.

I’m Marco Sukop, a visual storyteller on a mission to capture inspiring stories that empower people to take action towards mental health.
My journey in visual storytelling started with my travels to various countries, where I witnessed the impact of poverty and the importance of sustainability, community development, and positive change. During this time, I also faced my own mental health challenges and embarked on a personal healing journey.
Through my experiences with depression, physical challenges, and different kinds of healing processes, I learned the importance of prioritizing mental health. I pursued continuing education in therapies, coaching, and attended various retreats around the world. During my travels, I met several different approaches towards mental health that inspired me to document some of them in Portugal.
My approach to visual storytelling is rooted in authenticity and respect for the people and communities I work with. I believe in the power of a journalistic way of storytelling to spread awareness, initiate change, and empower people to take action.

My focus is on sharing my personal insights and experiences with you, as I document my own journey. You’ll witness how I manage my mental health while hiking, the lessons I learn, and how I use nature as a tool for healing and growth.
By sharing my story, I hope to inspire and empower others who may be facing similar challenges. I want to show you that it’s possible to find peace and calm in your mind, even during difficult times. And I want to encourage you to join me on this journey of self-discovery and mental health.
There are various ways to measure mental health status and different organizations may have different rankings or data sets. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) provides some data on the prevalence of mental disorders by country. According to their most recent estimates from 2019, the top five countries with the highest prevalence of mental disorders are listed on the map.
It’s worth noting that these estimates do not provide a complete picture of mental health status in each country, and there may be limitations in data collection and reporting. Additionally, prevalence rates can vary depending on the specific mental disorder being measured.
